The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail

A new North Carolina State Trail which overlays the OVNHT has been funded by the North Carolina Legislature. Taking advantage of this opportunity, a new Friends group for the Overmountain Victory State Trail (OVNCST) has been established to recognize the importance of the OVNHT as well as to help bring greater attention to the historical importance, the economic possibilities, and the health and recreation benefits of that trail in North Carolina. The Overmountain Victory North Carolina State Trail – Friends (OVNCST-Friends) is committed to completing as much of the unfinished trail as is possible through the eleven North Carolina counties through which it runs by our America 250th Birthday Celebration beginning July 4th 2026. The counties include Avery, Mitchell, McDowell, Surry, Yadkin, Wilkes, Caldwell, Burke, Rutherford, Polk, and Cleveland. Exciting impactful projects have been identified in these counties andOVNCST-Friends plan to utilize the recent state funding to leverage more funding and matches as the first five-year plan takes shape.

It is noteworthy also, that one of the most important supporters of the OVNHT at the state and national levels from its inception was Senator and Congressman the Honorable Jim Broyhill. We will ensure that his service and contributions will be recognized widely.
